GENERAL AESTHETIC SURGERY TRAINING PROGRAM
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
- The training program in General Aesthetic Surgery is a two-year training program designed to provide gradual progressive clinical experiences in the practice of general aesthetic surgery. The trainee is given responsibilities and operative privileges commensurate of his capabilities.
- The training program also provides a six-month rotation in general surgery to introduce the training fellow the general principles of surgery
GENERAL OBJECTIVE
- To develop competent, safe and compassionate aesthetic surgeons who will practice the art and science of aesthetic surgery
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
- Provide training fellows with practical scientific knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment options in aesthetic surgical cases
- Provide training fellows with proper surgical skills and training in the performance of aesthetic surgical procedures as required by the Philippine Academy of Aesthetic Surgery
- Familiarize training fellows and stimulate their interests in clinical and laboratory studies, in writing and presenting scientific papers designed to enhance knowledge in aesthetic surgery
- Instill among training fellows the sense of responsibility, discipline and compassion in the management of aesthetic surgical cases
- Develop adequate administrative ability and leadership qualities
- Maintain a good atmosphere for teaching and learning in the field of aesthetic surgery
ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES
TRAINING
- Produce competent, compassionate and artistic Surgeons who will practice aesthetic surgery.
- Provide training in aesthetic surgical procedures for surgeons and trainees from other training specialties
- Undertake staff development programs to enable staff members be recognized as experts in their field of experience
RESEARCH
- Undertake research which is relevant and applicable to the advancement of science and practice of aesthetic Surgery
- Improve accuracy in the reporting of data
SERVICE
- Provide humane and comprehensive care for aesthetic surgical patients
- Participate in the national effort to improve aesthetic surgical care delivery in the country
PROGRAM OUTCOME
- At the end of the training program, the training fellow is expected to meet the requirements set forth by the Philippine Academy of Aesthetic Surgery qualifying him/her to take the certifying board examination by the Board of Aesthetic Surgery
KEY / CORE COMPETENCIES
The training fellow is expected to study and master the following subjects:
- Surgical anatomy, physiology and pathology
- Wound healing
- Hemostasis
- Shock and resuscitation
- Metabolic and endocrine response to injury and stress
- Fluids and electrolytes
- Metabolism and surgical nutrition
The training fellow must have competencies in the following:
Diagnosis, Pre and Post-Operative Care of patients with aesthetic surgical procedures of the:
- Head and neck (Rhinoplasty, Blepharoplasty, Otoplasty, Rhytidectomy etc)
- Breast and soft tissue (Augmentation, Reduction, Lifting)
- Torso (Abdominoplasty, Liposuction, Gluteal Augmentation)
- Aesthetic Gynecology
- Extremities (Brachioplasty, liposuction)
Principles in evaluating basic diagnostic procedures for Pre-Operative Evaluation
CONTENT / MODULES OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM
FIRST SIX MONTHS
- The trainee is introduced to the basic principles of asepsis, antisepsis, surgical diagnosis, pre and post-operative care and principles of management of common aesthetic surgical conditions. He / She must master the art of assisting operations and preparation of equipment for OR use.
Activities and Duties
- Shall see the patient pre-operatively for physical examination and evaluation of laboratories with the supervision of the trainers
- Shall be present and assist during procedures
- Shall respect doctor-patient confidentiality at all times
SEVENTH TO TWELFTH MONTH
- Designed to provide further exposure to aesthetic Surgery Cases.
- Training fellow may be allowed to perform certain parts of the aesthetic surgical cases that he/she will assist depending on the discretion of the main surgeon (consultant)
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNERS
Criteria for advancement at the end of each year will be the following:
- Satisfactory grade in the annual in-service examinations given by the Philippine Board of Aesthetic Surgery (PBAS)
- Satisfactory evaluation given by the Trainer in his/her surgical orientation, motivation, dedication and other parameters set forth by the training management group
- Presentation of interesting case reports and journals done during the Monthly Scientific Meeting

- Written Examinations
- Completion of required number of cases assisted
- Trainors’ Evaluation
- Peer Evaluation
SECOND YEAR LEVEL
- This year is designed to provide opportunity and clinical experience in polishing surgical techniques, skills, dexterity and strengthening satisfactory surgical decision making ability.
- He / She will have the chance to handle the actual management of his / her patients under the supervision of his / her trainer.
Activities and Duties
- He / She may perform Aesthetic Surgical Procedures as part of his/her Case Matrix to meet the desired number of cases
- Shall be responsible for scheduling Monthly Scientific Meetings (Pre and Post Op Conferences, Journal Presentations)
- Shall complete, present his/her case matrix to the Board
- Shall submit a retrospective/prospective research paper presentation
ASSESSMENT OF LEARNERS
Criteria for Graduation
- Submission of Case Matrix (Trainee’s Log Book)
- In-service Examination
- Trainers’ Evaluation
- Peer Evaluation
- Final approval of the President and the Training Officer upon the recommendation by the Training Committee and upon clearance by the Training Officer
